Meet Darcie

April 26, 2018 by Devonna Wolfe Leave a Comment

Darcie is our NEW Serve Every Day Coordinator. She comes to us with over 10 years of ministry experience and a heart to serve. She will be overseeing volunteers and coordinating the daily projects that come in for our Serve Every Day program. We encourage you to get to know her and come serve along side of her.

Throughout the year, we meet the needs for under-resourced or disabled individuals and families daily through free volunteer services. Volunteers are able to serve their neighbors through projects in the community that fit their skills, resources, and schedule. Become a part of the movement to serve today. Beyond Community Christmas Shoppe: A Note from Friends of Fieldworkers

February 7, 2018 by Devonna Wolfe Leave a Comment

Almost two months have passed since we held our five Community Christmas Shoppes throughout Ventura County. On two back to back weekends, we witnessed profound joy, gratitude, and hope from families and volunteers alike. But the impact of Community Christmas Shoppe goes far beyond the one day event. Our dear friend, Judy Lucas reached out to us a few days ago and reminded us of this impact.

Dear ACTION,

Once again, we at Friends of Fieldworkers, Inc. are thankful for the superior job you do to bring smiles of joy to families in our county–to the children and their parents–at Christmas time.

This year was a special one because of the property, work time and resources lost to the Thomas Fire. Many of our families worked in the fields in spite of the flames and smoke and had the horrible choice between working in those conditions or being able to provide for their families. I am guessing that for many of our children, the ONLY gifts they received this year were the shoes from us and the toys from you.

We befriend and serve fieldworkers and their families in Ventura County. During two fires in Oxnard and Hueneme (2013 and 2017) which took the lives of a father and child and the homes of 30+ families, we followed up after the Red Cross finished their work and have befriended many of those families since. We have been blessed by the relationships made.

One of our goals is to acknowledge and honor those men and women who feed us at great peril to themselves and their families. We want our community to really see them, to get to know and care about them as individuals. For them to be able to choose gifts for their families and to put them under their trees is huge. Being a part of the community, our children see what other children have and feel validated when they, too, are blessed at Christmas.

Again, thank you, and may your organization continue to thrive.

Sincerely yours,

Judy Fisk Lucas
President, Friends of Fieldworkers, Inc.

Serve Day 2017 Story: Betty

July 6, 2017 by Devonna Wolfe Leave a Comment

On June 3, 2017, hundreds of volunteers of varying ages and skill sets gathered across Ventura County to participate in Serve Day. One of the agencies ACTION volunteers served at was Gabriel’s House, a large home and grounds in the middle of the fields in Ventura County. This transitional home in Oxnard serves as a place for women and children to find refuge after living on the streets, overcoming substance abuse, and escaping abusive relationships. This is a place for a fresh start.

This is where we met Betty. Her smile was radiant and her positive attitude and energy were contagious. But this was an attitude so positive and genuine, that it could have only been forged through trial. Betty had been in a relationship with a very abusive man, with whom she had many children. When her father died suddenly, she was depressed and hurting. Her grandfather gave her something to “take the edge off”, and this began the experimentation and addiction to drugs, including crack and cocaine. She spent her days in a high, and could not seem to escape the deadly hold the drugs and the abusive man had on her. Eventually, her children were taken from her. Years went by and she was not been able to them. She did not even know where they were.

One day, she found herself on a bridge ready to jump. Minutes before she was ready to end it all, she received a text from her oldest son which read, “I’m okay.” This text saved Betty’s life. While she went to a budget motel intending to get clean, she got high one more time. Betty recounted asking God for a sign that He was there for her. “I just wanted to be sure”. God answered her prayer- she was arrested at the motel while high on drugs. Because this was not her first time in jail, Betty was facing 9 years for this crime. At her hearing, however, the judge recognized the healing she needed. He released her to a program where she could get sober, get away from the abusive man, and start a new life.

Then tragedy struck again. After Betty was released from the program, she was diagnosed with cancer. After praying fervently to God calling out to Him for healing and guidance, God answered her prayer once again. While wandering the streets in Oxnard, Betty’s aunt saw her and took her back to the rehabilitation program the judge had assigned her to. There, she was seen by another doctor who informed her that the cancer was gone! It was then that Betty became determined to get her life back on track. She searched out her children, and found that they were back in the custody of their abusive father. Betty got the assistance of child protective services to remove the children from the father’s home, and earned visitation with them.

One day, through hearing Sam Gallucci speak at Harbor Church (now Grace Church) she was referred to Gabriel’s House, where she quickly became a standout worker and leader in the program.

Betty is now in charge of The Cottage at Gabriel’s House. At her second job with the Rescue Mission, she fundraises. She has saved enough money to afford her own place. She is reunited with 4 of her 6 children. Betty has found a sense of worth and skills she never knew she had. She is better and stronger than before.

These are the stories that we hear on Serve Day, while we trim trees and pull weeds. Serve Day is about so much more than the projects at hand- it’s about the people we serve. It’s about finding tangible ways to let the homeless, the addicted, the elderly, the disabled and the orphaned in our communities know that they matter. They are loved. In the words of Betty, “[You] don’t have to love us, but [you’re] here, loving us. That gives me a sense of worth.”

By the way, Betty has a new baby. Her name is Charisma Grace.

Praise Report Header

Serving those who served.

This March, the SERVE EVERY DAY ministry of ACTION gave the gift of  accessibility to an 84-year-old retired Navy SEABEE. The ACTION office had received a call from a woman requesting help for her disabled father, “Mr. E,” to help him maintain his independence and to safely navigate inside his house. She informed us that he had just lost his wife of more than sixty years and was now in need of modification to areas of the house that were restricting his movement. In response, the ACTION Disability Ramp Team sent a construction volunteer to the house to assess and determine what we could do to help.

We discovered that Mr. E was struggling to ambulate through his home, due to his inability to step over doorway thresholds and also could not safely enter or exit his shower. Although he had been using a walker to ambulate independently, he was also suffering frequent falls and injuries, leaving him stranded in his home without immediate assistance. His current condition prompted Mr. E to now transition into a wheelchair and required that he use ramps to get in and out of the house. Mr. E expressed his deep wish to remain independent and living in his home for as long as his mobility would allow. The ACTION Disability Ramp Team was able to grant Mr. E this wish, by listening to his needs and assessing his house to determine what  mobility devices would provide him his independence.

The next day, an ACTION volunteer was able to install a recently donated  wheelchair ramp to Mr. E’s front door, providing him immediate access in and out of his home. A few days later, ACTION was able to send a fellow retired military  veteran to install grab bars in Mr. E’s shower, allowing him to safely and independently transfer and bathe. Lastly, the Disability Ramp Team installed a partial ramp to Mr. E’s patio so that he could once again enjoy bird watching in his Praise Report April Picturebackyard. Thanks to the dedication and sacrifice of ACTION volunteers and donors, and the Disability Ramp Team, Mr. E is living independently in his home.

In the words of Mr. E’s daughter,

“This is really something.  It’s just so beautiful!”Praise Report April Picture 2
